Why Does Coaching Differ from Person to Person?

Why Does Coaching Differ from Person to Person?

The primary reason coaching methods differ from person to person is that each coach possesses different levels of experience, knowledge, dynamic visual perception, and instant decision-making ability. In addition, there is currently a lack of sufficiently objective and accurate shared information, leaving coaches to rely mainly on drone footage, videos, photographs, and limited comparative data from ergometer training.

Even when reviewing the same footage or information, coaches often interpret and instruct based on their own personal experience and intuition. As a result, coaching content naturally varies from one individual to another. Furthermore, the quality of shared footage, camera angles, and recording timing are rarely standardized, making it easy for different coaches to interpret the same rowing movement in different ways.

For these reasons, there is a growing need for more objective and standardized systems of data collection and information sharing.

As mentioned above, there are major individual differences in dynamic visual perception and instant judgment ability, as well as significant differences in experience and technical understanding. This inevitably leads to variation in coaching approaches. At present, the available “objective shared information” that could help reduce those differences remains limited, consisting mainly of drone-based tracking videos, photographs, and comparative data between ergometer training and actual rowing performance.

Coaching itself is a continuous PDCA process. As goals change, the methods of execution, evaluation, and improvement must also change. Therefore, completely identical coaching is neither realistic nor necessarily desirable, especially since every athlete is different.

However, when the ultimate goal of sport is defined clearly as “winning,” the range of effective coaching approaches becomes much narrower. And when objectively shareable data is added to the process, those coaching decisions can be refined even further.

Why Does Coaching Differ from Person to Person?
